Homage is a good term, however, in the world of art, artist's are inspired by others work to the extent that copy-catting is prevalent, not to say that borrowing a rythmic theme is such a blatant rip-off.

Look at how many British and American rock bands took the material of Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters and made a shitload of cash in the 60's and 70's!

And look how many times Led Zeppelin paid out royalties under the table, but still admit no wrongdoing. When you use other people's work and refuse to admit you did, it's a rip off.

And yes, the Grateful Dead did both. They "ripped off" Mystic Eyes by Van Morrison and Them (AFAIK, they never admitted the taking of it for Caution), but they paid homage to Buddy Rodgers in earlier versions of IKYR.
